The Adaptive Sports Association (ASA) was founded in 1983 by Dave Spencer, a young man who had lost a leg to cancer. Dave was a ski instructor and irrepressible visionary who believed that skiing could challenge and increase the self-esteem of all individuals with disabilities. Although Dave lost his battle with cancer in 1986, his dream of an organization dedicated to teaching people with disabilities to ski has continued to thrive and expand.

The winter of 2007-2008 marked the inaugural year of the Dave Spencer Memorial Scholarship fund. This program is a branch of our New Dimensions Scholarship program and is directed at individuals who have a similar situation to our founder. Ideal candidates are people who have amputations, or limbs at risk related to cancer, are new to adaptive skiing or snowboarding, are able to travel to Durango, and will help "spread the word" about ASA's programs within their communities and support organizations.

Four or five full scholarships will be awarded this winter and will include the following: round trip transportation to and from Durango, Colorado, five nights lodging with a Durango area host family, meals (excluding on mountain lunches), accessible ground transportation when in Durango, evening activities, 4 days of snow sports instruction (includes lift tickets, equipment, and private instruction) and loaner winter clothing (if needed).
