Veteran's Scholarship Program
The Adaptive Sports Association's Veteran's Scholarship Program is designed to assist Service members severely injured in Iraq, Afghanistan, or other recent conflicts. The program helps Service members develop the physical skills and the confidence needed to enjoy sports and bring back a "quality of life". The goal is to create a foundation to facilitate a positive, sustainable, long-term impact on the life and rehabilitation of our participants.
Unexpected, life altering trauma can severely impact the lives individuals through emotional, psychological, physical and social challenges. Our twenty-four years of experience has proven that sports and recreation can dramatically affect self-confidence, outlook on life and the ability to lead a rich, full, independent and productive life. ASA founder Dave Spencer once described this as the difference between "living life and just surviving a disability".
The scholarship free of charge to qualified recipients and includes: travel to and from Durango, Colorado, most ground transportation, lodging at a motel or host home, most meals, specialized adaptive equipment, clothing, instruction and other program related costs. Evening activities include a potluck and farewell dinner at a local restaurant. The average scholarship stay is 6 days including 4 days of ski/snowboard instruction. All logistics and reservations are coordinated by ASA. Spouses and/or assistants may be eligible for full or partial funding.
The scholarship program is in collaboration with military medical facilities, rehab hospitals, disability advocacy groups, Disabled Sports USA and the Wounded Warrior Project. Funding is provided by individual donors, the Torrey Pines Kiwanis Club, the Wounded Warrior Project and local service organizations.
Individuals interested in applying for this scholarship should complete the Veteran's Scholarship application on this web site and submit it to ASA for selection. |
